Valerie Alarid, Program Director
Valerie Alarid, a native Santa Fean, is the Leadership Santa Fe Program Director. She began her career in the travel industry, working as a travel agent and a managing a local travel agency. In the 30 years working in the trade, she gained significant knowledge of foreign countries, time management, administration, and customer service. Graduating from the 2016 Leadership Santa Fe program, Valerie further developed her managerial skills. Believing so strongly in the experience, she sought to be more involved with the program. She went from student to Deputy Director in 2015 and now holds the position of Program Director.
To help aid with food insecurity in Santa Fe, Valerie devotes time to The Food Depot. Valerie is co-leader for the Mission Outreach Group at Santa Maria De La Paz church. The mission group began in 2003 and over the last 17 years has sent 165 teen and adult volunteers to Honduras to aid the less fortunate and poor of Honduras.
Valerie lives in Santa Fe with her husband Richard Martinez, who is also a Leadership Santa Fe graduate. They have a daughter and 3 granddaughters. Valerie has been a certified indoor cycling instructor for 20 years, she enjoys an active life; hiking, biking, and skiing.
David Markwardt, Leadership Skills Trainer
David Markwardt is the leadership skills facilitator for Leadership Santa Fe. David is passionate about helping individuals grow to become better leaders so they make better decisions and get better results. David owns David Markwardt Consulting, LLC. He received a degree in Master of Science in Organization Development from Pepperdine University in 2007. David has a strong interest in organizational values. His research for his thesis focused on how experience-based training and development can support organizational values at the individual and team levels. His Master’s Degree in Poetry was awarded from Vermont College in 1998. He received his Professional Teaching Certification in 1992 from the University of Houston, Houston, Texas and his undergraduate degree in 1984 from Dartmouth College, Hanover, NH.
David has extensive training in experiential education, conflict resolution, cultural issues, gender issues, communications training, leadership training, and team building. David has facilitated numerous workshops and team-building retreats for organizations across New Mexico and the United States. David lives outside of Santa Fe with his wife and their youngest son. He enjoys skiing, hiking and is a published poet.
